Before you go. Start from Galu temple by 8am so you are off the meadow before the cloud drops. Carry two litres and a layer even in May. Cash still works better than a card at the tea stalls. If the ridge is ice, turn around at the first cafe and walk down.

Overview

Written for one person with a light pack. You sleep in McLeod Ganj or Bhagsu, walk to Triund and back in daylight, and do not hire a camp unless the sky is clear and you actually own a warm layer. The trail is popular, which is what you want when you are solo.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Bus in, drop the bag, walk Bhagsu

Overnight bus or morning Volvo to Dharamshala, then a local bus up to McLeod. Check into a dorm in Bhagsu or Dharamkot, not on the mall road. Shower, lock the big bag, and walk only as far as Bhagsu waterfall. Eat early. You are walking tomorrow.

  2. Day 2 — Galu temple to Triund and back down

Tea at 7. Share a taxi or walk to Galu Devi, then the stone path to the Triund meadow, about four to six hours up depending on stops. Eat at the first honest cafe, sit on the ridge, and start down by 2pm. You are back in the dorm before dark. Do not stay up in a rented blanket if you came without a sleeping bag.

  3. Day 3 — Slow morning, bus out

Hostel breakfast, a short walk through Dharamkot if your knees agree, then the local bus down to the Volvo stand. Buy water before you board. This is a weekend, not a summit CV.

Where to sleep, eat, and how to get there

Stay

A dorm in Bhagsu or Dharamkot

Ask for a locker and a bed away from the common-room speaker. Two nights. Budget about ₹600–1,200 for a dorm bed. A private room is optional, not the point.

Move

Volvo up, local bus to the trailhead

Delhi or Pathankot to Dharamshala, then the local bus to McLeod. From the dorm, Galu temple is a short taxi or a steep walk. Share the taxi. Do not rent a bike for one trail day.

Do

The trail, without a guide

The path is obvious and busy in season. A guide is worth it only in snow or if you plan to continue toward the snowline. Turn back if you are the last person on the path.

Eat

What to eat so you can walk

Dal and rice the night before. On the trail, maggi and tea are the menu. Carry one packet of something salty in your hip pocket.
